Sad. My mom's dementia is worse. She has to be reminded I am married. If she has problems remembering my husband, I am worried she will one day forget who I am. She calls me by her youngest sister's name often. It's Anastacia and I am Stacy. She calls my middle sister by her other sister's name often. (NO resemblance between names at all) Kita is her sister, Mary is my sister. She still knows who I am and my sisters and my dad and my nieces and my BIL. (He has been around for 34 years.) She is just very confused about anything else in her short term memory.

When I told her I was married yesterday, she said "You have been married so long, why don't you have children." Crying or Very sad

She is very affectionate, just like when I was a child. Kissing and hugging me often. (This ceased as an adult. ) I think sometimes, I am a child in her memory.

An old lady I knew when I was a kid had Alzheimer's and I watched her going downhill. I had lots of good memories of our time together - feeding her chickens, feeding her goat pears off the enormous tree she had in her yard. That tree had pears that weighed over a pound each! I often helped her in her kitchen, and helped her weed her garden too. She and I had a close connection and I loved her dearly. It was awfully sad when the day came that she didn't know who I was. Eventually she got lost in her own tiny house and couldn't find the bathroom.

I can't imagine how much worse it is when it's a beloved family member who forgets a lifetime of memories. I don't have any good advice, except to just love her and make sure she knows that whoever you are, you love her. That's all we can do when our parents are failing - take care of them like they took care of us.

My grandmother was going through this before she passed away. It was almost a blessing when she passed away after hitting her head in a fall, saving her from totally losing it.

Decided I totally lost my mind in the "FORUM YEARS". I now view those years as a way to keep my mind off my poor mom and my own illness and lack of child. I did not reach out to the real people in my life, including the distant cousins I was raised with and were close to. I did not keep up with my cousin's child named after me. (SHE IS NOW IN COLLEGE, majoring in Philosophy.) My dear cousin Mary was MARRIED and DIVORCED and suffered through a horrible custody battle in the five or six years I was not in contact with her. (She is a second cousin once removed. Smile

) FB now makes me realize all my friends/cousins were right there ready to be reached.

Its great that you could reconnect. I tend to keep in touch with at least some of my family online now...

Working a lot to make up for being away on vacation last week. Looks like we are spending Thanksgiving in Boston. I hate flying.

I am so glad I will be home with my parents. It's selfish but who cares?
